Writing a good ad
- Say what it actually is. Condition, age, faults and all. A scratch mentioned in the ad is a detail; a scratch discovered on the doorstep is a wasted trip for both of you.
- Use your own photos. Not the manufacturer's, not one from a search engine. Pick the most honest one as the cover.
- Price it, or say why you cannot. "Price on request" is allowed; a deliberately low price to pull people in is not.
- Choose the right category. A room to rent is not For sale. A thing you want is Wanted, not a bargain-priced For sale ad.
- Keep it to one ad. Edit the one you have rather than posting it again; the app will refuse an exact duplicate anyway.
- Take it down when it is gone. The most annoying ad on any noticeboard is the one that has already been sold.
What is not allowed
The full list is in section 6 of the terms. The short version:
- Nothing illegal, stolen, counterfeit or dangerous.
- No weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco or medicines.
- No sexual services, and nothing sexualising a minor — ever.
- No live animals.
- No financial schemes, lotteries, loans, or jobs that ask you to pay to apply.
- No hate, harassment or discrimination — including "only X need apply" in a job ad.
- No spam, no bait pricing, no ads that exist to send people somewhere else.
- Nothing that belongs to somebody else: their photos, their words, their phone number.
Ads are checked against a list of prohibited terms before they are published, and you are told what to fix on the form. The check is automated and imperfect in both directions — passing it does not make an ad allowed, and a false positive is worth telling us about.
Talking to people
- Ask the question you actually have. "Is this available?" with no follow-up wastes everyone's evening.
- If you say you will come at five, come at five, or send a message.
- Haggle if you like. Do not bully.
- The comments on an ad are public. If an answer is useful to the next person, that is where it belongs; take the specifics to chat.
- No means no, the first time.
Meeting safely
- Meet in a public place with people around, in daylight where you can.
- Tell somebody where you are going, and take them with you for anything large or expensive.
- See the thing before any money changes hands. Test what can be tested.
- Never pay in advance — no deposit, no booking fee, no "registration charge", no UPI request from somebody you have not met.
- A price far below what something is worth is a warning, not a bargain.
- For a rental: see the place, meet the owner, read the agreement. For a job: be suspicious of anyone who wants money from you to give you work.
- If something feels wrong, leave. You owe a stranger nothing.
Your own privacy
- A phone number in an ad is visible to everybody who can see the ad. The app warns you; believe it.
- Your exact location is never shown to anyone — others see a distance and a place name. Do not undo that by writing your full address in the description.
- Photos sent in a chat are stored as ordinary files and are reachable by their URL. Do not photograph documents, cards or anything with your address on it.
- Give your address, when you have to, in chat and to one person — not in the ad.
Reporting and blocking
Every ad has a menu with Report in it, and every person can be blocked. Use them.
- A report tells us about the ad or the person. Reports stay on file even if the ad is deleted afterwards.
- A block works both ways at once: you stop seeing them, and they stop seeing you — ads, comments and messages. The app explains this before you confirm.
- Blocking is private. The other person is not told.
- Report anything involving a minor, a threat, or a crime to us and to the police. We are a noticeboard, not an emergency service.
What happens when a rule is broken
Depending on what happened, we may remove the ad, remove a comment, restrict an account, or close it. Serious cases — anything unlawful, anything involving a child, a credible threat — mean immediate removal, and we will cooperate with the authorities where we are required to.
If you think we got it wrong, write to avirajsfdc@gmail.com and say what was removed and why you think it should not have been.
